Very powerful for women to understand the differences in what they face, compared with men. This can happen in many areas of life, yet go unnoticed. Instead, we experience frustration without understanding why. The points you’ve illustrated are helpful Donna.
You also make an excellent point in that many people are out there teaching an outdated curriculum. I like that you are up-to-date with what’s currently going on in the industry. It sounds like you truly know what students need and tailor your sessions to a students individual requirements that will take them to the next level. Clearly, you would be an asset to anyone, women especially, who want to develop what it takes to make it in the music industry.

Thanks Carolyn. I really appreciate your comment. Kudos to you for taking music on with what I’m sure is a busy schedule as an English Teacher. May I recommend Tom Jackson’s DVD’s to you if you are interested in more about stage performances. He is one of the top live show consultants out of Nashville and literally has changed my approach to performing. His DVD’s arent cheap but he will definately take you to the next level for stage. I will be featuring him at some point soon on a podcast as well. I am presently ordering his full package for my own development. Either way, just trying to help. You bring up some very valuable and realistic points. The thing is your comments deal with three issues:

1. Not reaching goals
2. Issues in dealing with men
3. The economy

I feel it’s important to view these things as seperate and distinctive challenges. Of course they do overlap at times but there are different ways to deal with them.

First of all we all have goals and dreams and some we reach and some we don’t. To say I have reached all my goals would not be true, some I am still reaching for and others I have left behind. But I have found that if I break down goals into smaller, realistic steps that my chances are better at reaching them. I also find that wishful thinking only takes place when we are too unrealistic with things. For instance, thinking that I will be signed as a pop artist is unrealistic since I am not in that age bracket – therefore I can plan as many goals as I want -it ain’t gonna happen. Having said that I can succeed in the area of my demographics which is blues and jazz. If I am not succeeding, I feel I need to ask myself why. Perhaps I havent practiced enough, perhaps I need to move to a better location etc… Whatever it is, if it is really what I want, I must keep pursuing my desires. I also believe that obstacles will always be in the way of our goals, because we are intended to tweak ourselves so we can qualify for the next level of our journey. Obstacles make us look within to see what we are doing wrong or if we are on the wrong path.

Your second point is that it is difficult to work with men. Well, this is the main reason I have started this blog. I wrote an ebook discussing these exact challenges (31 Success Secrets a guide to Gigging with Men). I wrote this to help women in these exact struggles. Men have a very different way of working that most of us are unaware of. I myself, felt that because I always was around guys that I would know how to work with them, but I was wrong. My relationship with men is polar opposite of my working relationship with men. Many of the ways I deal with men now has completely changed from years ago. I did alot of reading up on this stuff and I have found much more success with guy musicians now that I understand that their approach is completely different than mine. Yes men can be difficult to work with, but I guarantee that once you understand how respect, being a competent leader and understanding the dynamics of being a team player work, your career will change drastically. I have seen this time and time again. Not telling you you have to buy my book. You can also look at the books: Hard Ball for women and Why women dont get the corner office. I have written specifically for female musicians while these books are more corporate. Either way. I believe these would help you.

As far as the economy goes. yeah! I know it sucks right now, but we are in a transition and alot of musicians are still making money especially through working with the internet. Check out Arial Hyatts books on internet business and building your fanbase. The economy wont always be like this…and in the mean time we do what we have to do to survive.

Anyways, I hope you continue in your career and not let these issues stop you from going forward.

Dear Vivian,

I came across your blog because I was perusing the internet for inspiration. I have an upcoming cd release gig–i am in an old time roots music duo with a man who has been performing since the late 1940s (I am so happy about this!) and I’ve been thinking about connection and all that. I am an English teacher by trade, used to interacting with students and asking them to tell stories, and I’m realizing that stage presence is something like teaching but different too. I am shy about being a “diva.” But your writing has really inspired and encouraged me–you write well too. Thank you!

Unfortunately, this is all wishful thinking. I’ve set goals only to find that “life is what happens while you’re making other plans.” We just can’t control the things that happen to us in life. We can set goals but circumstances beyond our control can prevent us from achieving them.

For example, as a female guitarist, I found that most musicians I’ve attempted to work with were male and they felt uncomfortable working with me and were incapable of working with me as just another musician. (They thought of me as “the pretty girl” and seemed to want me to be a groupie, not a coworker.) That’s just something I can’t control. Some male musicians are married and act as though they’re cheating on their wives or something if they collaborate with a female musician. So even though I’ve been playing for many years, I’ve found few collaborators and despite my setting of goals, have found that I’m not in total control of events that happen to me. I can’t control someone else’s attitudes toward women or their behavior toward me.

I’ve also struggled in this economy and found that has held me back as well. I just can’t afford a car nor can I afford certain types of equipment. That’s something I can’t control, though I’ve been trying for years now to overcome the obstacles.

Sometimes setting goals is futile when the world just won’t cooperate with us and what we’d like to achieve.

When that happens, I just try to make “lemonade out of lemons,” “stepping stones out of stumbling blocks,” as they say… And I just do the best I can with what I have.
